The people that rise to the top seem to have goals. The ones who consistently want to learn and reinvent themselves. The professionals who know why they are working so hard and have a vision of where they want to go. Those people have career goals and so should you.

Goals can come in all shapes and sizes. They can be career, personal, athletic, or corporate goals to name a few. Let's focus on career goals.

Career goals are something to hold yourself accountable towards. It's the end state of the journey you are on. Perhaps it is a professional certificate, or transferring offices, or negotiating a raise this year. Whatever it is, write your goal down and stick to it.

What are your goals when you start working? Have you written them down? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

If you don't have goals, the organization, your boss, your parents, society will define them for you. You'll be pushed down a path, in line and behind others. One day you'll wake up and forget where you are going. It may be too late to steer the ship back on track.

That doesn't fun does it?

Have career goals that are achievable. Revisit those goals as often as possible. When you hit the milestone: reflect, celebrate, and define new ones.
